Module III - Leading in the Organization

Content

The final module explores how leaders create truly effective, context specific, vision and purpose and engage and align key stakeholders to build both individual and organisational capability.    This is a highly process-driven module in which participants work initially with a specific practical leadership challenge to examine firstly the political landscape in which actions need to be taken.   Individuals draw up a power map for their specific challenge.   This illustrates where power lies in relation to the problem and what the linkages are between the various elements.  The next stage consists of “The Leadership Walk”, an experiential session in which each participant presents the action they intend to implement in the short-term relating to the challenge.  The group takes on specific roles to ensure the individual has addressed all the potential barriers and enablers to implementation.    Participants apply the concept of the Transition Curve to address the challenges they face in taking people through change.

The final stage of the module and programme involves delegates undertaking a Vision Quest.   Participants are given the opportunity to spend several hours alone in nature to reflect on how the exploration of leadership throughout the programme becomes actionable in their own leadership context.   They will spend time before going out deliberating on a question or intention they want to explore regarding their own leadership vision.   On their return, they tell their story and receive feedback geared to help them understand the message the contemplation has offered.   This experience and feedback then forms the basis of their personal commitment to actions to take their leadership vision forward in their own organisational context.

Throughout the module, we will explore the following questions:

  • What is your leadership purpose and vision?
  • How can you influence effectively amongst key stakeholders both within the organisation and externally?
  • How can you lead people through change?
  • How will you take your leadership vision forward into the organisation?
Method
  • Interactive discussions
  • First hand case studies and coaching by peer group as well as by facilitators
  • Facilitator input (lectures, exercises, facilitated role-plays etc.)
  • Reciprocal feedback
  • Experiential learning methods

Fundamentally, we do not see the trainer as a 'teacher' with superior knowledge, but instead as someone who facilitates and supports. Their primary expertise is in shaping learning processes. Coaches will adjust to the needs of the individual and/or group to ensure the best outcome for all.
