'Leadership Journey for Leaders of Managers' Enters Second Round

“Leadership Journey for Leaders of Managers,” the new program introduced by Bertelsmann University in 2017, is entering its second round. The regional program series is offered in Germany, France, Europe and the U.S. It is aimed at managers who themselves lead teams. Impressions and field reports from the first year can be seen in this short video clip.

"Bertelsmann and its businesses are becoming increasingly digital. Given the complexity and speed of the changes involved, we want to actively support our managers in sharpening their digital skills. The ‘Leadership Journeys’ offer them the opportunity to deal with these challenges and the increasing interlocking of leadership and business topics in a practical, hands-on way. The program series thus contributes to making Bertelsmann executives fit for the demands of the digital age," says Immanuel Hermreck, Chief Human Resources Officer, describing the new concept.

An overview of the Leadership Journey

In all, about 85 executives from more than ten countries and nearly all Bertelsmann divisions took part in the pilot series of the programs. Participants in “Leadership Journey for Leaders of Managers – Europe,” for example, came from Finland, Belgium, Hungary, the Netherlands, Britain, and Poland.

During each “Leadership Journey for Leaders of Managers,” participants examine their role as managers and their role-specific challenges in three modules, each lasting three days. This is done using case studies from their own working environment, among other things. During the “Journey,” they reflect on their personal leadership style and impact on others, and build relationships with colleagues from other countries and divisions.

Besides reflecting on their own impact as a leader, participants also work with the key topics of “Management of complex organizations,” “Strategy implementation,” “Change leadership,” and “Innovation management.” The focus is always on how executives can optimize their effectiveness in these areas.

Since 2018, participants have also had exclusive access to the content of Harvard Business Publishing’s digital library “Leading Edge”, which allows them to prepare for and follow up on the modules on their own.

Other Leadership Campus offers

Bertelsmann University also offers qualification programs for other leadership roles. The “Leadership Journey for Team Leaders” is aimed at all managers who lead teams. In Fall 2019, the Leadership Campus will launch a new program entitled “Mastering Organizational Leadership” for “Leaders of Business and Organization,”  i.e. executives with overall responsibility for an entire business with all its functions.

Since Spring of this year, these classroom formats have been supplemented by the latest online tutorial on Leadership Onboarding. It is designed specifically for managers who are new to the Group or to their role, or who wish to refresh their knowledge in various subject areas.

Further information on all leadership offerings can be found in the Leadership Campus.
