Making the most of artificial intelligence while also being aware of its risks – this is the goal of the new training that Bertelsmann employees can now find on Peoplenet. The aim is to help as many colleagues as possible use AI confidently and effectively in their daily work. At the same time, the European Union’s “EU AI Act” requires such training for all employees working with AI – a number that will grow sharply in the years ahead.

Bertelsmann CFO Rolf Hellermann, the main sponsor of AI at Bertelsmann, is encouraging all employees to take part in the training. “It is important to me that we all develop a basic understanding of AI and benefit from the opportunities,” says Hellermann, who also chairs the Bertelsmann Tech & Data Advisory Board. “So take a few minutes to explore the topic of AI at Bertelsmann with curiosity and an open mind.”
The training was developed by Bertelsmann University, together with Group Data Protection (ZCD) and the Bertelsmann AI Hub, and it covers the essentials of AI at Bertelsmann:
- Introduction to AI: What concepts underpin AI, and what do all the technical terms actually mean?
- Working with AI in the workplace: What risks exist, and what mistakes should be avoided?
- AI at Bertelsmann: Which committees at Bertelsmann are involved with AI, what do the Group guidelines on AI cover, and the latest on cross-divisional collaboration on AI?

Colleagues who want to go deeper after completing the training will receive recommendations for further learning opportunities through Bertelsmann University and the Bertelsmann Collaboration Platform (BCP). The training is initially available in English and German, with more languages to follow.
Interestingly, the training itself is already an example of what AI can do – it was created with the support of AI tools. This makes Bertelsmann University a pioneer in producing training content with AI. Another example is the AI avatar “SAM” from the Corporate Culture team, which was used for the first time in this year’s employee survey. In an accompanying video, “SAM” explains the goals and provides background on the survey.

Questions about the rollout of the training in each division will be answered by the respective HR departments. Employees can find specialist contacts, supporting materials, and further training and information resources on the resource page created for the training.
